John Harry Mackey

John Harry Mackey of Reading, Pa died Wednesday, September 29, 2021 in his daughter's home in Philadelphia. In hospice care prior to his death, John died peacefully and surrounded by loved ones. He leaves behind his daughter Heather Kathryn Mackey, son-in-law Ian Shumard, grandsons Jackson and Dylan, granddaughter Kylie Grace, brothers Rev. Peter, Timothy (Susan), Phillip (Jane), sister Mary Susan (Tom), nieces and nephews. John is preceded in death by his parents Rev. Dr. Sheldon and Marie Mackey and his former spouse and best friend R. Kathryn Romano. Born in West Reading September 21, 1944, John was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy and Ursinus College. He serviced in the US Army Reserves from 1966 to 1974. For most of his career John was employed by Traveler's Insurance Company working for branches in Philadelphia, Chicago and Pittsburgh. Prior to his retirement John was employed by Reliance Surety in Philadelphia. John was an avid reader and well known to any library he lived in proximity to. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, a good beer and a medium-well steak, watching Eagles games and spending time with his grandchildren. He will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, intense political discussions and for the love he showed his family. Per John's wishes, no public service is being held at this time.
